CRATO
Pousada Flor da Rosa
Located in Crato, 22 km from Portalegre, Pousada Flor da Rosa is a place of medieval mysticism. In the course of its long history, this 14th century fortress monastery of the Order of the Knights Hospitaller served as a castle, convent and palace, before opening its doors to hotel guests in 1995. The small village of Crato is famous for its pottery, which is still made in the traditional way. Potters can still be seen at work and purchases can be made direct from the craftsmen. Approximately 20 kilometres to the east is the walled town of Portalegre, near the Spanish border. This town is overlooked by the ruins of a medieval castle.
