stay
Small, centrally located unique boutique hotel, managed by Eight Hotels Australia, minutes from Oxford Street and the city, and with easy access to the harbour, beaches and airport. Modelled on the first Government House the original building was built in 1830 and was one of a handful of private mansions constructed at that time on the Darlinghurst Ridge looking back toward the newly established town of Sydney. Formally renovated by award-winning architect Furio Valich the original Colonial Georgian mansion has been preserved where possible, while giving the whole building a post modernist edge. No boring hotel corridors here. Rooms open onto an undulating communal street featuring a curved concrete wall with original artworks.
Staff are friendly and efficient, all rooms are non-smoking and comfortably furnished with ensuites, individual air conditioning, cable TV, tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryers, king and queen size beds. The Loft Room also has a DVD player.
The hotel features an extensive roof garden with city skyline views, a large gazebo style guest lounge. Some of the hotel rooms open on to a tiny sheltered courtyard area; an ideal place for that first coffee of the morning. Guests can access the roof garden via the central stairway.
play
In the late 1970s the famous Cauldron Nightclub was established in the basement of the building and operated there for nearly 30 years before finally closing its doors.
The Loft Suite of the hotel was once the VIP Room for the nightclub and was accessed by a hidden stairway that descended from the ceiling into the club to allow access and then retracted again ensuring the complete privacy of the many well-known and some times notorious persons who frequented the club.
