The Edinburgh & Lothians Whisky & Spirits Trail

Edinburgh whisky trail

Edinburgh Loves Whisky

Purely for the benefit of our readers I’ve been out and about tasting whiskies, gins and liqueurs so that we can report our findings back to you.

We’ve also put together a map to help make finding these drinks easier – or you could just pop in to your local Edinburgh pub and ask for them.

As we are Scottish, in Scotland, and famous for whisky I thought that would be a good place to start.

  • Glenkinchie malt distillery – if you take a short drive out of Edinburgh to East Lothian you can exerience a working distillery and enjoy their fine produce. Glenkinchie distillery is where they make the Edinburgh malt. After the tour you can enjoy the Glenkinchie Single Malt. This is a dry whisky compared to malts from other parts of Scotland. It has a warm finish, and a smoky spiciness. This distillery is a hidden gem.
  • The Scotch Whisky Experience – now that you have the taste for malts lets try a few others – 300 more in fact. If you head back into Edinburgh, straight to Castlehill on the Royal Mile, you will find The Scotch Whisky Experience. Take a tour around the World’s largest collection of Scotch whiskies, and discover the the various tastes and aromas on offer. The tour includes a free dram (shot of whisky).
  • The Edinburgh Gin – this gin is produced and bottled in Edinburgh. It’s crisp, clean and spicy. Edinburgh Gin was awarded a Gold Medal at the prestigious, international SIP Spirit Awards 2010 San Francisco. The traditional gin ingredeints of juniper, coriander and citrus peel are mixed with heather and thistle milk to make this gin a winner.
  • Brammle Scotch Whisky Liqueur is a family produced liqueur from East Lothian, and has been selected as one of the top 100 liqueurs in the world. The liqueur is wonderfully rich and fruity liqueur. An ideal gift for someone back home, or for yourself.
