The Royal Mile is Edinburgh’s most famous street, and has been for centuries. The Royal Mile stretches west to east, with Edinburgh Castle at the highest point in the west, down the hill to The Palace of Holyroodhouse and The Scottish Parliament at the east end.
The Royal Mile is the main street in Edinburgh’s Old Town.
The Royal Mile is where Edinburgh gory history and gothic buildings can be found. Although many of the buildings on The Royal Mile are old, narrow and crooked, there are also some large, modern and impressive hotels and apartments to enjoy.
Below, Hotels.tv reveal our favourite places to stay on, or very near Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.
From west to east on the Royal Mile, our recommended hotels are;
Hotel Missoni is a 5-Star wonder on the corner of George IV Bridge. What was once a dreary council office block is one of the most stylish hotels in the world. The Missoni family are designers from Italy and their creations have been used to great effect throughout the hotel. The colours, textiles and patters are bold and bright. But don’t worry if you feel a little over awed by the style and fashion, the staff are friendly and extremely helpful.
Ibis Edinburgh Centre – VERY central, VERY affordable (mustn’t use the word cheap) and VERY tidy. Don’t expect too many extras from this 2-star hotel but it’s mostly likely the best 2-star hotel you will ever stay in. The bar, reception area and eating areas are very smart and welcoming.
Radisson Blu is a beautiful, luxurious and historic hotel in the centre of the Royal Mile. All 238 rooms are modern and welcoming, the health club is excellent and the breakfasts buffet is to be savoured. This hotel is enjoyed by corporate travellers and international travellers alike. The hotel also has loads of parking.
The Carlton Hotel is a lovely big hotel, with a spa, gorgeous rooms and superb service. Some rooms have amazing views out over Edinburgh and beyond. The hotel is also a great place to hold a wedding or big event.
Bank Hotel – if you are here to party and enjoy a drink this could be the place for you. The hotel rooms are above the Bank Bar, which is in a busy part of town.
Smart City Hostel – it’s rare we recommend hostels on Hotels.tv but Smart City Hostel is well located, well run and well kitted out with facilities. It’s a lively modern hostel and ideal for groups on a budget. Plus, it has a 5-star hostel rating.
Holyrood ApartHotel – these apartments are ideal for business or pleasure. Rooms are spacious and the location is ideal – in a quiet corner near the busy action. The 4-star hotel offers a mixture of studio apartments and two-bedroom luxury apartments – great for families or groups. Each luxury apartment comes with its own fully equipped kitchen, lounge with Flat screen TV and bathroom.
Dreamhouse Apartments (Holyrood) – these six luxurious guestrooms are equipped with flat-panel televisions with satellite channels, DVD players, and complimentary TV Internet access. All apartments at this 4-star hotel have fully fitted kitchens. The bottom (east end) of the Royal Mile is very close to Our Dynamic Earth, Arthur’s Seat, the Scottish Parliament, the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Calton Hill.
