Boutique Hotel Review: Dakota Edinburgh Hotel

There are two ways to describe the Dakota Edinburgh Hotel. Firstly, the Dakota Edinburgh Hotel is a convenient business hotel with ample parking near the M9 motorway. Secondly, the Dakota Edinburgh Hotel is one of the most stylish hotels in the UK with stunning bedrooms and an award winning restaurant. Both of these descriptions are perfectly correct, however, it is the features in the second description that keep drawing guests back time and again to this magnificent boutique hotel outside of the city.

Read on to find out why this hotel is like no other business hotel you have experienced.

I’m pretty sure that 99% of people driving along the A90 just south of the Forth Road Bridge outside Edinburgh wonder ‘what’s that?’ as they drive past the Dakota Edinburgh Hotel. The dark and sleek building looks more like a Silicon Valley R&D building than a luxury hotel. The sign on the side of the hotel simply says ‘Dakota’ with no mention of it being a hotel.

However, a hotel it is, and there’s no doubt about it as you enter the doors into the chic reception area.

Dakota Edinburgh Bedroom

The Dakota Edinburgh Hotel is 9 miles by road to the very centre of Edinburgh, and the train from the nearby Dalmeny train station takes 20 minutes to Edinburgh Waverley train station. Dakota Edinburgh Hotel is a 10-minute drive from Edinburgh Airport, and you can smell the fresh paint on the Forth Road Bridge as it’s so close. Enough about location already, let’s talk rooms.

All 132 stylish rooms are air-conditioned and ultra modern. The big TVs are hooked up to satellite TV, including Sky Sports. Why hotels offer Sky without Sky Sports always amazes me – it’s like having an Angus steak without red wine (more to follow on this topic). As you can see from the photos, the beds are big and comfy – perfect for after a hard day’s business. Bathrooms are crisp, roomy and well stocked with pleasant toiletries – see below.

There’s not a great deal else going on in close proximity to the hotel but don’t worry about heading out for a bite to eat or drink. The hotel has an award winning seafood restaurant and cool bar. The steaks in the restaurant are hard to beat too. But no wonder, come June time this hotel is full of farmers attending the nearby Royal Highland agricultural show. If the Dakota Edinburgh Hotel didn’t serve up the best of Scottish produce the June guests would tear the place down. The hotel’s wine menu has been carefully selected to offer something to excite every palette.

Dakota Edinburgh Dining

Make sure after dinner you try out at least one of the hotel bar’s cocktails, international beers or single malts. Bar staff are extremely knowledgeable and helpful, so make sure you test them out. Staff throughout the hotel are extremely knowledgeable, friendly and very keen to help.

Dakota Edinburgh Meetings

Dakota Edinburgh has four unique meeting rooms that are suited to anything from intimate boardroom gatherings to large conferences. There’s also plenty parking for your delegates, and when they are not busy with PowerPoint presentations they can enjoy the hotel’s fine catering and the fine views of the Forth Road Bridge.

Another great perk of staying at Dakota Edinburgh is the complimentary shuttle service to the airport. Sorted.

So in summary, Dakota Edinburgh is well located and caters beautifully for the business traveller but it’s much more than this. The attention of detail to the rooms, service, food, drinks and meeting spaces make it one of the great hotels in Edinburgh.

If this hotel was 9 miles further east towards Edinburgh Castle it would be better known around the world. However it’s not, but you DO now know about it so why not experience its luxury next time you visit Edinburgh.
